How to Coz-ify Your Couch During Winter

by Kyle Timtson

‘Tis the season for the shivers, fa la la la la, la la la la. But it’s also the season for hot cocoa, snuggling up by the fire, and staying inside, protected from the cold. All in all, ’tis the season to get cozy! And what better place to cuddle up than on a nice, comfy sofa or sectional?

What’s that? It doesn’t look very cozy at the moment? Don’t worry, that’s an easy fix, and we have the tips to make any couch into a haven of comfort and joy.

Blankets, Y'all!

Nothing, and we mean nothing, says “cozy” like a warm, welcoming blanket. Whether it’s a simple throw, or an extravagantly woven masterpiece, adorning your couch with a blanket or two is an excellent way to keep cozy when the temperature outside is dropping.

Folded and draped over the back of the sofa or an armrest, blankets add a level of invitation and relaxation that a naked sofa just doesn’t have. If the folded method looks a little too rigid, just try draping it without folding. A look of just having been tossed onto the couch can be even more welcoming.

Find the method that works best for your aesthetic and sofa. If you have a sectional or a sofa with a chaise attached, more than one blanket goes a long way.

How Many Pillows Does One Couch Need?

The answer: the limit does not exist. Okay, maybe that isn’t exactly true. There is only so much room for pillows on a sofa if you still want to sit on it. But plush, silky-smooth, ultra-soft, or supportive pillows are the lifeblood of a cozy sofa setup.

Just picture it: You come home from a hard day’s work (even if that just means leaving the home office) feeling exhausted. All you want to do is flop down onto your leather sofa and kick up your feet with the push-button recline function, a warm, steaming beverage in the cupholder. But wait, there are no pillows!

How are you supposed to get the ultimate relaxation without pillows?

You can’t. Our sofa scientists have done the math, and it’s impossible.

Adding throw pillows onto your sofa will give you a place to rest your head if you like to really lounge when you’re relaxing, or a plush addition to the armrest if you’re more into sitting than laying.

Pillows will also bring pops of color and style to a room, creating an even more inviting atmosphere for you and your guests. Add throw pillows that complement your aesthetic if you don’t want them to stand out, or accent the room’s look with colorful or patterned fabrics. Mixing and matching textured pillows with your living room seating adds a bold yet charming element.

Rest Your Feet (and Your Eats)

If your sectional, sofa, or recliner doesn’t have cupholders or a hidden, fold-down table, you might want to invest in an ottoman. These little footrests can do more than take a load off your aching feet at the end of the day.

Ottomans can double as extra seating when you’re having a party, or even triple as a cocktail or coffee table when you want to have something to munch on while enjoying a New Years episode of your favorite show. That’s a resolution we can get behind!

You can even find an ottoman with hidden, lift-top storage. More blankets, anyone? Now, that’s cozy.

Every Sofa Needs a Sidekick

We know when we’re getting cozy on the sofa, reading a good book or watching a festive movie, the last thing we want to have to do is get up to go get snacks from the kitchen.

A side table keeps your eats on hand and within reach. Peppermint bark? Got it. Gingerbread cookies? Just reach out and grab one. Snifter of eggnog? Drink up! It’s all within reach.

A coffee or cocktail table will do the same! Some coffee tables even feature lift-and-lock tabletops that you can bring closer to the couch (and your face) when you’re snacking and gently drop back into place when you’re done.
