5 Ways to Repurpose Your Guest Room

by Kyle Timtson

We haven’t had company over for a while and the guest room is starting to get a little lonely. The bed hasn’t had an overnight guest other than the cat in months, the shelves are gathering dust, and you’re just not sure why that room even exists.

Does the light switch even work anymore? When was the last time that room saw sunlight?

Enough is enough. Whip open those curtains, dust off the shelves, and get ready for a brand-new room. We have solutions that can repurpose that guest room into a place for work, play, fun and, yes, even guests.

1. Home Office

With more and more companies transitioning to a work-from-home model, the home office is slowly becoming a necessity. From schoolwork to career work, your family has a lot going on. By swapping out that guest bed or sleeper sofa for a desk, hutch, office chair, bookcase, and storage options, you can turn that room into a haven of productivity.

House plants! Avoid turning your home office into a dungeon by adding some greenery and letting your plants—and yourself—get a healthy dose of sunlight.

2. Home Gym

Home workouts may require more motivation and dedication, but when your gym is closed, you’ll be happy you have a place to feel the burn!

Clear out some space, add some home-gym equipment, and get to sweating! Of course, you’ll want to keep things organized with shelving, cabinets, and other storage options to keep your weights, yoga mats, and any other gear out of the way when the room isn’t in use.

Maybe you just need a place to keep your workout gear. A storage bench is not only an attractive addition at the foot of your guest bed, it’s also a discreet place to store your home gym equipment when not in use.

3. Craft Space

Do you love crafting? Maybe you make your own jewelry or run an Etsy shop, or you love to make your own holiday decorations for family and friends. A dedicated crafting room can get your creativity flowing and make for a nice, quite space to hone your skills and have fun.

We suggest repurposing a dresser, chest, or armoire to hold your crafting supplies. A desk or drafting table makes for a good spot to create, and a quality table lamp, floor lamp, or desk lamp is a necessity for good lighting.

Whatever clever items you’re making in your spare time—or work time, if it’s more than a hobby—you’ll find all the right furniture to help you get the job done, from desks to chairs, to lighting and shelves.

4. Music Studio

If you’re looking for a place to jam, create, or just rock out, your own personal recording studio is great way to repurpose your guest room. A little soundproofing can help with this. Bookcases and bookshelves help make walls thicker, thus making it harder for sound to pass through.

You can even take it a step further and line the bookshelves with acoustic panels, commercial sound barrier sheeting, or even blankets and quilts.

Some shelving and storage cabinets would help with storing your gear, amps, cables, tambourines, and whatever you need to make music. The final touch: Add a sofa or loveseat. Your fans will need a place to sit, after all!

5. Guest Room 2.0

Our final idea is repurposing a guest room into … a guest room? We know that sounds odd, but just hear us out! Repurposing your guest room into more than just a guest room can take any of the above ideas and enhance them.

Just picture it: a craft space AND a guest room. A recording studio AND a guest room. A home gym AND a guest room. Okay, we admit that last one doesn’t sound as inviting. We like to think of it as themed rooms at a bed and breakfast.

Adding a drafting table, shelving, cabinets, or an armoire to an existing guest room gives you extra storage for items, and could even give your guests extra room for storing their belongings if their stay is going to be an extended one.

We also love the idea of a guest garden (lots of plants), guest game room, guest home theater (extra accent chairs and a sleeper sofa), or a guest gallery (if you have lots of art to display). If you’re struggling to find room for extra items, consider a sleeper sofa instead of a large bed. This will provide seating and sleeping space while still letting you have room for other décor and storage.

Of course, a large bed is very inviting, and if your space is large enough for a bed frame and the other storage or cabinetry you may want, we recommend it.
